The bleak times, always the same shoe racks made of wood with four to five floors in unit look are long gone. Whether fine acrylic glass, high-gloss lacquer surfaces, solid wood or polished chrome – hardly a noble material makes stop in front of modern, [...]

Combined cycle power plant: The darling of the nuclear-outs

In future, Switzerland – when it comes to Energieminsterin Doris Leuthard – with gas-fired power plants annually produce about 20 terawatt hours of power. Up to seven such power stations would be built. Environmentalists criticize the construction. The advantages of this type of power plant, however, are numerous.
Combined cycle power plants have a higher efficiency, lower emissions, lower construction and maintenance costs and can – what makes for countries with a high share of renewable energies particularly interesting – be [...]

Milan Fashion Week autumn/winter 2012: In praise of bolder women

There’s a unifying theme among the women pictured on this page: they all look terrific. They also happen to be over 40. Some of them are over 50 – and beyond. And all are wearing current fashion, in its myriad guises. Furthermore, they were being hungrily "papped" away by the photographers in Milan this week. Jil Sander’s time will come next season. In a surprise statement at the weekend, Onward Holdings, the Japanese owners of her line, announced that, at the age of 68, the Hamburg-based designer is [...]

Wade turns often laughable All-Star Game into real competition

ORLANDO, Fla. — The slap could be heard from the floor high up into the seats. Kobe Bryant spun around to the baseline and Dwyane Wade slammed him hard from behind across the shoulders and the nose. It was like a family argument that had spilled over unpredictably and irretrievably.
The crowd groaned and gasped. A violent foul at an All-Star Game? What those fans didn’t realize was that this was a good thing.
"I obviously didn’t try to draw no blood, but I took a foul," said [...]

Louboutin Challenges Ruling That Lets YSL Sell Red-Soled Shoes

Louboutin SA asked a U.S. appeals court to stop Yves Saint Laurent America from selling red-soled shoes that it claims violates its trademark.
Louboutin requested that the appeals panel overturn U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero’s decision in August rejecting the company’s bid to prevent Yves Saint Laurent from selling shoes Louboutin said were identical to its own. At a hearing following that ruling, Marrero said he would defer deciding whether to cancel Louboutin’s red-sole trademark until the appeals court ruled on the injunction.
“We don’t claim shades of red,” Harley [...]

Lawmakers Gear Up for Election-Year Battle Over Budget Deficit

Republicans rejected President Barack Obama’s $3.8 trillion election-year budget plan even before it arrived at the Capitol and said they will offer an alternative that relies on spending cuts to slash the deficit.
“All we’re getting here is more spending, more borrowing, more debt,” said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican. “This is not a fiscal plan to save America from a debt crisis, and to grow the economy. It’s a political plan for the president’s re-election.”
House Republicans, eager to help their party regain [...]

Before clothes hit Fashion Week runways, designers test makeup and hair for perfect looks

The process doesn’t whiz by in a few minutes, like the quick clips on “Project Runway” and other TV shows. Instead it’s a sometimes hours-long effort to get the exact look to accent the collection perfectly.
Stuart brought in two test models along with hair stylist Odile Gilbert for Kerastase Paris and makeup artist Diane Kendal, who used Stuart’s cosmetics line.
Everyone, including several assistants, worked in a large, well-lit white-walled studio with garments from the collection hanging on silver clothing racks around the room. Two rows of [...]
